We recently got back from a family vacation at Disney World. It was a great time, filled with laughter, adventure, and an memories. But it also got me thinking about the importance of prioritizing health and fitness as parents.

During our vacation, my boys were eager to get souvenirs. I found myself initially trying to dissuade them, reasoning that these items could be purchased elsewhere at a fraction of the price. But then I remembered my own childhood, where I cherished a Mr. Potato Head that I had bought from Disney World. It wasn’t a special edition or anything extravagant, just a regular old toy. Yet, it held sentimental value and became a significant part of my memories.
This made me realize that we should allow our children to pursue their own interests and desires, even if we may not fully understand or agree with them. Our kids deserve the freedom to explore their own joys and passions without feeling judged or restricted by our preconceived notions.
However, it’s essential to strike a balance. As parents, we must prioritize our own well-being, both physically and mentally. Just like the safety demonstration on an airplane instructs us to put on our own oxygen mask first before helping others, we must ensure our own health and happiness before we can effectively support and care for our children.
For me, focusing on my health and fitness was never about achieving a perfect physique or conforming to Instagram standards. Instead, it was about having the energy and vitality to actively participate in my children’s lives. I wanted to be the dad who could keep up with their boundless energy, engage in activities, and create cherished memories together.
